San Pedro Calungsod Church is a Roman Catholic church located in Pulangbato, Talamban, Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines. Its secondary patron is St. John Paul II.

History

San Pedro Calungsod Church started as a mission station in Pulangbato initiated by San Isidro Labrador Parish in Talamban, Cebu City after the approval of Archbishop Jose Palma in 2012. It was the product of Basic Ecclesiastical Community or BEC, and it serves 22 chapels in the villages of Binaliw, Pit-os, and Pulangbato. It was declared a parish on December 7, 2013.

The construction of the church on a property donated by Flora S. Montebon began with the groundbreaking rites on January 25, 2015 and was attended by Archbishop Jose Palma and Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama. Its design was created by Michael Torres of ArchiGlobal Inc. While the church was being built, a chapel was erected nearby.

Solemn dedication of the church and the altar was conducted February 20, 2023.

Architecture

The church, sitting on a 4,300 square-meter property, has a total space of 1,200 square meters with a capacity of 700 people. Its lower floor houses the function room and adoration chapel. Its overall design was patterned after a mitre of Pope John Paul II paired with an appearance of streams of light beamed from a source.

Its most dominant feature is the brown, conical roof whose battens look like they emanate from the cross erected at its topmost portion and a semicircular concrete wall that bounds a round sky window. The main entryway is through a rectilinear French door flanked by grilles of cross, which is a recurring motif in the side church walls.

In the interiors, the bare ceiling erupts into a steel interplay of rafters, joists, and beams. Over the altar, light pours in from the sky window. The nave is made of two rows of wood-iron pews.

Celebration

The feast of St. Pedro Calungsod is celebrated by the parish every October 16.

Services

Holy Hour and Confession are open every First Friday of the month from 5:00 in the afternoon to 6:00 in the evening.

The Parish Office is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 in the morning until noon and from 2:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon. On Sunday, it is open from 8:00 in the morning to 12:00 noon and from 1:30 to 4:00 in the afternoon. It is close on Monday.
