A Yearning for the Stage

At the age of 12, Olivero embarked on her musical journey. However, her initial audition for EIAR radio in 1922 proved unsuccessful. Undeterred, she continued to hone her craft, convinced of her talent. A second attempt at the audition met with the same result, but this time, Olivero encountered Luigi Gerussi, a vocal coach who recognized her potential and became her mentor.

Debut and Gradual Recognition

In 1932, Olivero made her radio debut with the Turin radio, performing in the oratorio "I misteri dolorosi." Although she had secured minor roles in operas at Milan's La Scala and other venues, critical acclaim eluded her at first. Yet, Olivero continued to perform tirelessly, gaining recognition as the "Queen of Provincial Theaters."

The Triumph of Adriana Lecouvreur

In 1951, Olivero triumphed in the title role of "Adriana Lecouvreur" at the urging of the opera's composer, Francesco Cilea. This performance catapulted her to stardom, and she became known as "the best Adriana Lecouvreur of the 20th century." Olivero's meticulously prepared interpretations and emotional intensity marked her as a true master of the verismo style.

International Acclaim and Late Success

Olivero's repertoire extended far beyond Adriana Lecouvreur, encompassing diverse roles in operas by Verdi, Puccini, and others. While she remained highly esteemed in Europe, it wasn't until 1975, at the age of 65, that she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
